Set up your business in Härjedalen

Härjedalen has the eighth highest number of entrepreneurs in Sweden, industrial land ready for development and plenty of renewable electricity.
Härjedalen is bubbling with business energy. The number of new business start-ups puts the municipality in the top ten in Sweden. We work together here to make sure your business can develop and grow. On top of that, the amount of renewable electricity produced by our locally-owned power company exceeds demand, so prices are low and there are great opportunities, even for electricity-intensive industries and companies, to grow.
Härjedalen is also in a priority area for government business support. The municipality’s business unit is here to act as your guide and sounding board, helping you to locate a suitable industrial site, piloting you through the construction and planning permission process and navigating the jungle of government grants and other funding.

Surplus of locally produced green electricity
Härjedalen municipality is extremely well placed to play its part in the vital energy transition the world has to get to grips with. Unlike southern Sweden and much of the rest of Europe, we have low electricity prices and reliable access to large amounts of locally produced renewable electricity.
According to an article in business magazine Näringslivet in February 2025, there is a significant surplus of electricity in northern Sweden (electricity zones 1 and 2), where base load production meets 280 percent of local demand.
In southern Sweden, on the other hand, there is a significant shortfall – base load amounts to 70 percent of the need in electricity zone 3 and only 21 percent in zone 4. This poses major problems for companies and industries looking to grow in southern Sweden. Additionally European electricity pricing and the decommissioning of nuclear power are having a negative impact on the investment climate.
Härjedalen produces more electricity than is consumed locally, which naturally benefits new industrial start-ups. As a business owner, there’s no need to worry about power shortages up here. More people using the electricity where it’s produced is also a benefit for the whole community.
Low electricity prices in Härjedalen open up scope for investors
The average price of electricity in Härjedalen in 2024 was 28 öre per kWh, compared with Skåne, for example, where electricity cost 57 öre. In 2025 so far, the average price is 21 öre per kWh, compared with southern Sweden, where businesses and households pay four times that, at 93 öre per kWh.
The process of setting up a business in Härjedalen is similar to that in the rest of Sweden. However, as a business owner, you don’t have to wait for the expansion of renewable energy such as wind and nuclear power. Here you can put in an application for a connection right now.
